Marketing for free!

Great marketing need not cost the earth, in fact there are lots of things you can do for free, they just require time, effort and organisation. Here are some ideas:

  • Send out press releases to your local newspaper, radio station or to a media that is right for your target audience
  • Post blogs on your website that are informative and motivational, not to mention written with SEO in mind to boost your rankings in the search engines
  • Collect together some testimonials/case studies and display them on your website or in your literature
  • Use the power of direct marketing to increase your sales: letters, emails or telephone calls (if you want results or if you’re tight on budget, direct is often best)
  • Hold or run an event at your office, or perhaps hold a joint event with someone that has great facilities. You don’t have to necessarily offer catering, although a cup of tea or coffee is a good minimum. Even if you do have to hire a room, it need not cost the earth as many venues (especially those out of town) can offer excellent room rates or day delegate rates
  • Social media. It’s free and can produce good results over time by raising brand awareness, but be warned, it is time consuming, so you may decide to prioritise another ‘direct’ activity that actively gets you enquiries

These methods can be great if you’re working on a shoestring, but we do recommend getting professional help as soon as you can afford it so that you can work ‘on’ your business not ‘in’ it. Otherwise, you may find you reach a plateau and cannot get any further growth – a death nell for any SME.
